1946_10_10 Charming scenes like this attract visitors to "The Wilds" in Houghton now spring has brought into flower many thousands of indigenous plants.

1948_06_14 A lawn in The Wilds ... Climbers just approaching the summit of The Wilds will find this new reward for their efforts - a lawn, levelled out, green and inviting amid rocks and highveld trees.

1948_09_13 At their best now ... now at their best, The Wilds confirm their claim to a place among Johannesburg's show-pieces, as this morning's picture indicates.

1949_04_20 The Wilds, a popular Johannesburg beauty spot, is being extended to the eastern part of Houghton Ridge between Kloof Road and Munro Drive, a project that was held up by the war. The photograph shows the extension, where development has already made considerable progress. The existing Wilds can be seen in the foreground. The lorry is travelling along Kloof Road and the upper pathway, for pedestrians only, runs through the new Wilds.

1949_08_19 City's new beauty spot ... The Parks and Estates Department has been beautifying the koppies on the eastern side of Houghton Drive to make them a fitting counterpart of "The Wilds" on the western side. Thousands of bulbs and roots of South African flowering plants have been put in. Crazy-paved paths thread the stony hillocks and provide a pleasant walk along the ridge from Houghton Drive to Munro Drive. This scenic path affords grand views of the northern suburbs and the countryside to the majestic double line of the Magaliesberg on the northern horizon. Many varieties of indigenous daisies are now in bloom and the gigantic new natural rock garden is well worth more than one visit.

1961_08_23 Mr and Mrs Benjamin Edwards and Prince their Black Labrador go for a long walk over The Wilds every afternoon - and twice on Sundays.

1962_01_23 Light background music would be acceptable at The Wilds, says Mrs Williams, a recent visitor to The Wilds, who adds that on the day of her visit the music was more in the nature of a foreground blast. This fact, together with the litter, spoilt her visit.

1968_03_14 Shelter from the public ... Inside the magnificent new conservatory at The Wilds. A star-shaped plant conservatory - the R40,000 gift of a Johannesburg Mining house - has been completed on the western hilltop of The Wilds and will be officially opened in September. The conservatory is so constructed that visitors can view everything from the outside. Mr Vernon Bishenden, the district officer in charge of The Wilds, said this was to protect the indigenous plants from the rain, the frost and the public. "If we left the plants outside, the public would snap them up," he said.

1968_11_29 A special plea to motorists to avoid using Houghton Drive from 1.30 p.m. tomorrow until 5 a.m. on Monday was made today by Johannesburg's Chief Traffic Officer, Mr Saville Dorfman.

1968_12_21 To oblige the photographer, Mr Michael MacMurray of Lower Houghton jumped a gap and stood on the new pedestrian bridge at The Wilds. It is not certain if the bridge will be open for the Christmas-New Year holidays. Handrails have still to be placed on the lower section seen on the right of the photograph taken this week.
