Bezuidenhout Park

An urban walk in a 3 hectare “green lung” in east Joburg.

Directions: Turn into the parking area off Marcia St.

Dog Friendliness: Technically all dogs should be on lead especially if you walk there at weekends when near the prayer meetings and soccer matches.

Walk Time: About ¾ hour.

Parking: There is a large central parking area. It is best to park near the soccer fields as there are usually quite a few other cars there.

Safety: It is an area that is perceived as becoming more unsafe. However, other dog walkers report that they rarely see anything untoward. I would advise you walk in the evenings when other dog walkers are around or at the weekend when the park is well used (walk in the western section away from the prayer meetings).

Facilities: Children's playground, a shabby kiosk, benches and bins. Most other facilities such as the bowls club, swimming pool and miniature railway have now closed down.

Water: The Jukskei River and the small stream in the north-east are both polluted. Take drinking water with you.

The Walk: From the car park you can walk just about anywhere. The walk marked on the map is the one I did with a local dog walker. Near the car park there is an old farmhouse (now used as a recreational building) and the farm’s graveyard. There is an information board near the house with further historical details.

Watch Out For: Stay away from the rivers as they are polluted. Watch out for golfers practicing on the old baseball diamonds.
