RHOODEPOORT
ATHLETICS STADIUM

Description:
A short
walk of about 2 km on the western fringe of Johannesburg. The
walk takes you along a path around a small dam and an athletics
stadium.
Location:
It is in Roodepoort, just past the Botanical Gardens (Map Studio
pg. 28 DF 79). Take Hendrik Potgieter Road towards Krugersdorp,
turn right into Handicap Road. At the T-junction turn left and
follow the road to the right.
Dog Friendliness:
Technically dogs are not allowed around the dam, but nobody
seems to comply. However keep them out of the athletics stadium.
Walk
Time:
Under 1 hour.
Parking:
Park anywhere
near the stadium. You should see other vehicles. There are no
car guards.
Safety:
Walkers and other
users seem quite content to let their children mess around by
themselves on their motorbikes and quad bikes. It is probably
advisable not to stray too far from the stadium unless you are
in a group. Take precautions if your dog gets freaked out by
motorbikes and quad bikes.
Facilities:
There is a water fountain near the main gate (W on the map) and
some litter bins.
Walk:
Find the brick path that runs along the northern edge of the
dam. Follow this around the dam in a clockwise direction. This
will lead you around the dam and back over a bridge to the
eastern end of the stadium.
Follow the path
past the stadium and across some unused playing fields until you
reach the high banked amphitheatre. The path continues along the
top of the embankment and doubles back to the right along the
base as the embankment peters out.
Cross the fields
back to your car. If you want to extend the walk, you can take
any number of crisscrossing paths and tracks on the hill to the
east of the dam.
Watch Out For:
Motorbikes and quadbikes – they don’t seem to travel very fast
and they make a noise so you can hear them before they get to
you.
