RHODES
PARK (Kensington)

Description:
A small but
pretty urban park with a lake and a sports field. Unfortunately
it is a little shabby with lots of litter and broken glass in
places.
Location:
Rhodes Park is
in Kensington near to the well known antique, restaurant and
deli area in Queen Street (Map Studio pg. 83 DU 107).
Dog Friendliness:
Technically all dogs should be on lead, but nobody seems to
comply. Exercise caution when walking around the sports fields
as sportspeople use them for training.
Walk Time:
Under 1 hour.
Parking:
The
simplest place to park is in the off-street parking area just
off Montague Rd near the library in the south-west corner. There
are usually car guards around who will keep watch.
Safety:
There have been
recent attacks, often on single walkers. So walk in group and
try and walk when there other people around – at weekends,
evenings around 5pm.
Facilities:
There once were good facilities, but they are now pretty run
down. There is a tea room serving basic snack foods, but it
wasn’t open during the week.
Water:
There is a large
ornamental dam in the middle of the park where dogs swim and a
pond in the south-west corner that is a bit murky and smelly.
Walk:
Despite its shabbiness, it remains a pretty park to walk in.
Dogs love swimming in the main dam. The water birds keep their
distance from swimming dogs, but not so far as to forego any
titbits walkers might feed them.
The walk is pretty
obvious – follow the path around the dam until you reach the
north-east section where there are some buildings. Leave the dam
and move to your left towards the sports fields. Walk around the
edge of the fields and back to the grassy banks near the dam.
You can mooch around the shady small pond, but watch out for
broken glass.
Watch Out For:
Broken glass and other litter.
